The smell of sweet success as ‘’Sweet Pea’’ picks up Champion Baby Beef.
25 year old James Bailey from Leyburn, had a successful day at Layburn Marts Spring Spectacular where his 6 month old Blonde cross heifer, ‘Sweet pea’’ was awarded 1st prize and champion Baby Beef. Sweet pea not only caught the eye of Judge Donald Morrison, but also Buyers John Mellin and Clare Cropper who purchased her for £2050.
On the day James also picked up a first prize with Ironside, his 11 month old Blonde cross Steer which later sold for £1700 to Craig Bentley and Family.
James farms a 150 acres, where he runs 450 sheep alongside his recently established 10 cow commercial herd, which he is slowly increasing. All his cows are served by his Blonde Bull Penyghent Galileo.
James left school and studied at Askham Bryan College, a specialist land-based college in York, and has always had a keen interest in showing livestock, which gave him a push to start breeding something good for the job. When asked why he chose to use blonde over his herd James said, ‘’with work commitments I needed something that was easy calving as I am not always about, the calves are born small and develop very quickly, and provide me with something of show quality that continues to be in demand in the market.
